Meet Our Low Brass Specialist: Elmien Els

 

Elmien Els brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for low brass to NW Musikon. Her primary instruments are the trombone and euphonium, which she began playing at the age of 13. Elmien is a highly accomplished orchestral musician, having been a member of numerous prestigious ensembles, including the National Youth Wind Orchestra, the Western-Transvaal Youth Orchestra, the T.E.D Youth Orchestra, the PUK Symphony Orchestra, and the Zephyros Symphonic Wind Orchestra.

Her dedication to music led her to join the South African National Defence Force Band in 1992, where she quickly rose through the ranks to achieve the esteemed position of Chief Musician. Elmien further honed her skills under the tutelage of acclaimed Euphonium Teacher Noël van Herrewegen-Bkern at the UFS Odeon School of Music.

Elmien joined NW Musikon as a permanent brass instructor in 2009, where she continues to inspire and guide students. She is currently preparing for her Performance Licentiate from the Trinity Guildhall College of Music in Euphonium, demonstrating her ongoing commitment to musical excellence. In addition to her musical pursuits, Elmien also completed her Diploma in Foundation Phase Education in 2023, further underscoring her dedication to nurturing young learners.
