Specialization : Clarinet & Saxophone
Specializing in clarinet, Mrs. Christine Vermeulen started her musical education at age 5. A Originally a pianist, it would be the character of the clarinet that would captivate her. At the age of 11 she already proved herself an in dispensable member of the Wolmaransstad Girls Orchestra. Under the dedicated guidance of Dr. Maryn Botha, Mrs. Vermeulen completes her Gr. 8 in Clarinet from the University of South Africa in 1990. In the same year she completed prepositional and piano studies under the guidance of Tommy Ferreira.
A member of the National Youth Wind Orchestra, T.E.D Orchestra, Western-Transvaal Youth Orchestra and Wolmarransstad Girls Orchestra, it would be clear that orchestral participation would play a critical role in her life. In 1993 Mrs. Vermeulen joined the South African National Defence Force Band and quickly progressed through the ranks to obtain the position of Chief Musician in the Orchestra.
Mrs. Christine Vermeulen has been a full-time member of the NW Musikon staff since 2011 an dis responsible for both clarinet and saxophone tuition.
Mariska van der Merwe
Specialization : Flute
Specializing in concert flute, Ms. Mariska van der Merwe started her music education at the young age of 6. Originally a pianist, it would be the concert flute that grabbed her attention and would be her main instrument. She received flute lessons from Mrs. Debbie Raymond and Mr. Nesco du Toit. She has been a vital member of the Zephyros Symphonic Winds since 1997.
Ms. Van der Merwe completed her National Diploma in Tourism Management from the Universality of Technology in 2004. She further went on to complete her B.Ed degree at UNISA in 2014.
Training under the expertise of flautist Georgy Sandor Fazakas, Ms. Van der Complemented her Gr. 8 in concert flute in 2011. Partaking in master classes by Megan Twyford & George Fazakas.
Ms. Van der Merwe also received cello training from Dr.Human Coetzee at the NWU. She further attended master classes presented by Mrs. Tilla Henkins from the Bloemfontein Music School.
Specialization : Recorder
After matriculating with music as a subject, Mrs Riemke Pretorius joined an A Capella choir under the capable hands of Elize Rautenbach. The choir went on to complete various National tours. She later joined the SUKOVS where she furthered her choral participation.
In 1985 Mrs. Pretorius joined the SAPS. During this period she was not only a member of the Free state Police orchestra, but also achieved the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel after completing a 3 year qualification from the Technicon South Africa.
Mrs. Pretorius’ love for music led her to complete her Bachelors of Musicology Degree from the University of South Africa. She further went on to complete her Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of the Free state. A qualification that saw Mrs. Pretorius teach a variety of school subjects,including music.
Mrs. Pretorius joined the NW Musikon in 2016.
