Wim Wybenga

Specialization : Violin & Viola

Specializing in violin, Mr. Wim Wybenga started his music education at the age of 7. Originally a pianist, it would be the violin that would steal his heart. He obtained his Gr. 8 in violin from UNISA with distinction in 1994 and followed with his Gr. 8 in piano in 2010 also with distinction.   

Mr. Wybenga went on to complete his B.Sc Honns. in Earth Sciences from the NWU (Cum laude) whilst taking violin as an extra subject. He performed for His Majesty, King Letsie III of Lesoto at the Royal Palace in Maseru in 2009. His debut CD, “Café-Clarens” was released in 2010.

In 2011 he presented a violin workshop at the NW Musikon, little knowing it would soon become his new home. In 2012 he collaborated with the Drakensberg Boys Choir in their 2012 production titled “Music in the Mountains”.

In 2013, Mr Wybenga was invited to perform on the popular Afrikaans Magazine Talkshow, Pasella, in their celebration of Klerksdorp. Mr. Wybenga has been a full-time violin instructor at the NW Musikon since 2012. He is the head of bowed-strings and the manager of Symphonix.

He completed the Trinity College London Licentiate (LTCL Recital) Diploma.

He attended the UNISA string symposiums presented by Tim Kliphuis, Eddy Marcano and Max Baillie.

Mr. Wybenga’s mentors include Yana Lechtman, Piet Koornhof, Francios Henkins, Elmarie van der Vyver and Annamarie Schulenberg.

Mariska van der Merwe

Specialization : Flute & Cello

Specializing in concert flute, Ms. Mariska van der Merwe started her music education at the young age of 6. Originally a pianist, it would be the concert flute that grabbed her attention and would be her main instrument. She received flute lessons from Mrs. Debbie Raymond and Mr. Nesco du Toit. She has been a vital member of the Zephyros Symphonic Winds since 1997.

Ms. Van der Merwe completed her National Diploma in Tourism Management from the Vaal University of Technology in 2004. She further went onto complete her B.Ed degree at UNISA in 2014.

Training under the expertise of flautist Georgy Sandor Fazakas, Ms. Van der Merwe completed her Gr. 8 in concert flute in 2011.Partaking in master classes by Megan Twyford & George Fazakas.

Ms. Van der Merwe also received cello training from Dr. Human Coetzee at the NWU. She further attended masterclasses presented by Mrs. Tilla Henkins from the Bloemfontein Music School.
